You all know how much I love a good roadtrip, right? One of the things I want to do this year is see more of my own country, so roadies are a must. The drive down to Rotorua is one of my favourites because the scenery is so beautiful – especially driving through the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park. And at the end of the drive is one of my favourite spots of all, The Redwoods in Whakarewarewa Forest.
I always wear my sneakers when I’m driving long distance but getting dressed for a roadtrip is always something that I have to think about and if I’m honest I usually get changed at least once or twice before I actually leave the house! I always want to find the perfect combination of comfortable that I’m not going to get too hot (or too cold) in. As the weather cools down my favourite joggers and a tee are the ideal combo, with a hoodie that I can throw on when I get chilly.
Because I’m planning on making my roadtrips a regular thing I thought I’d share some of my top roadtrip tips with you:
- Check all of the things on your car before you leave. Tyres have enough air? Do you have enough gas? All good for oil? Lights and indicators working? Got your warrant and rego? Honestly, nothing ruins a good roadtrip faster than something going wrong with the car, so get it all sorted before you go!
- Set up a great playlist before you leave! I use Spotify for my playlists, and because I have the Premium version it means that I can download my playlists so I’ve got sweet tunes wherever I go.
- Make sure you take breaks. We usually stop every hour or two to stretch our legs, go to the bathroom, and have a rest. This means that we’re not driving tired, and it means we get to our destination with less grumbling. If you’ve got kids, stopping somewhere they can run around and let off a bit of steam means there is usually less backseat squabbling.
- Bring snacks and drinks. You don’t need these for shorter trips but snacks are great on longer trips because it means that you won’t need to buy food on the way (which can get expensive). We always take our own drink bottles which we can refill rather than buying bottled water, because it saves money and is kinder on the environment.
- Make sure you allow extra time for your journey. Between roadworks, traffic jams and needing to stop for breaks, you’ll need to give yourself a bit of extra time to arrive.
